BBQs and Beginnings

The smell of new school supplies is in the air! This Fall in particular will be one of new beginnings, as many students return to in-person school for the first time in a year and a half, which will come with it a lot of new experiences or maybe some we've known but become unfamiliar with over the last couple of years.

Many of CAN's students will already be prepared for this transition thanks to practice over the summer as we got used to setting and following more structured Summer Camp & YouthWorks schedules and working on projects in collaborative shared spaces again.

They have also spent the summer reflecting on their social, emotional, and physical wellness and are equipped with awesome tools to start the new year off ready to go!

Highlights

  • Back-to-School BBQs at Creekside and Hikone were a hit!! We can't wait to celebrate with Arrowwood Hills, Green Baxter Court, and Bryant next week.

  • Amazing Helpers made the BBQs a reality by sorting and preparing all of the new school supplies for the students to pick up at the parties - thank you to all VISTAs and Interns who were able to step in!

  • Management Retreat was a success! If you're curious to view our organization's 5-year plan plan, you can find it here: Board Approved CAN Strategic Plan 2019-2024

Announcements

September Birthdays-

  • If you see our Director of Hikone, Colette DeRaud, on September 19, make sure to wish her a very happy birthday!

Upcoming Staff Meetings- In the Fall, our weekly rotation of staff meetings will be as follows:

  1. Management Meeting

  2. All Staff/Interns Meeting

  3. Management Meeting

  4. Off-Week / Meet on as-needed basis (e.g. Anyone who needs to touch base with specific people can set aside these Fridays to schedule those meetings with whomever it makes the most sense to include)

That means for September, our meeting schedule as of right now will look as follows:

  • September 3, Management Meeting: 1-2pm

  • September 10, All Staff* Meeting: 1-3pm

  • September 17, Management Meeting: 1-2pm

  • September 24, Meet As-Needed (times will vary)

*All staff are invited to attend- these are mandatory for Directors & VISTAs; Program Assistants and Interns are welcome to join if available.

You can also view our more dynamic schedule on CAN's Google Calendar: https://calendar.google.com/calendar/u/2?cid=aW5mb3JtYXRpb250ZWNobm9sb2d5QGNhbndhc2h0ZW5hdy5vcmc

Google Calendars are a helpful tool CAN uses so we can make updates and share them out with all of our stakeholders in case anything changes!

After School Program (ASP) Orientations- These are incredibly valuable times we set aside to meet with our team members to prepare for the new school year. Make sure to talk with your supervisor and sign up to attend one of the two options so you can be in the loop about expectations for this program!

  • Option #1: Thursday, September 2: 4pm-6pm

  • Option #2: Friday, September 3: 11am-1pm

Tips & Tidbits

I'm new to CAN and feel like there's so much to learn! Where can I go for resources?

Welcome to CAN ACADEMY!

Head to www.can-academy.org/general-resources to view additional materials and trainings that you might find helpful throughout your time with CAN.

In the beginning, a lot of new information comes at you really quickly. It's hard to learn everything at once and maybe easy to forget a thing or two as well. We can't cover everything you will need to know in an online training and one-day orientation. That's why we created CAN Academy.

If you are ever wondering - how else can I approach this situation? See what we have on our resource hub made just for YOU!

And, if there isn't something there you would find incredibly valuable for yourself and staff to come, please email Katie at klampen@canwashteanw.org and we can work together to add a new resource to our website.
